TOP 10 BIGGEST CRATERS IN THE WORLD

Various meteors have bumped the Earth in the long past and have left unforgettable scars on our planets which we see today as craters. Following is the list of 10 such meteor strikes on our planet which changed our landscape for ever.

10) Chesapeake bay crater: This was formed on the eastern shore of North America about 35 million years ago. It is the largest known impact crater in the U.S.The diameter of this crater is 85 km. The rocks on which it struck had been fractured to a depth of 8 km.

9) Popigai crater: This was formed in Siberia in Russia. It is the fourth largest crater in the world and was formed around 35 million years ago simultaneously with the Chesapeake bay impact crater. The diameter of the crater is about 100 kilometres.

Many scientists claim that this site contains millions of carats of diamonds. These diamonds are known as impact diamonds because they were formed due to the collision of the meteorite with the graphite deposits.

8) Chicxsulub crater: This was formed in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. It was formed about 66 million years ago. The diameter of the crater is about 180 kilometres and is 20 kilometres in depth.

The impact of this crater is associated with the world wide extinction of non-avian dinosaurs.

7) Kara crater: This was formed in Yugorsky peninsula in Nenetsia, Russia. It was formed about 71 million years ago. The diameter of the crater was about 120 kilometres but now it is just of 65 kilometres. This is the 4th largest crater in the world.

6) Morokweng crater:  This was formed in the Kalahari desert near the town of morokweng in South Africa. It was formed around 145 million years ago.

The diameter of the crater is about 70 kilometers and it was formed by and asteroid of about 5-10 kilometers in diameter.

5) Manicouagen crater: This was formed in Quebec, Canada. It is about 214 million years old. This is the largest visible impact crater in the world. The crater is about 100 kilometres in diameter.

4) Woodleigh crater: This was formed in Western Australia in Woodleigh station. It was formed about 364 million years ago. Scientists claim that the diameter of the crater ranges from 60-120 kilometres.

3) Acraman crater: This was formed in the Gawler ranges of South Australia. It was formed about 580 million years ago. Scientists claim that the size of the diameter of this crater ranges from 35-40 kilometers or from 85-90 kilometres.

2) Sudbury basin: This was formed in Ontario, Canada. It is the 2nd largest crater in the world. It was formed about 1.849 billion years ago. The diameter of this crater is about 130 kilometers.

1) Vredefort crater: This was formed in the town of Vredefort in South Africa. It is the largest crater in the world. It was formed about 2.023 billion years ago. The diameter of this crater is about 300 kilometers. It is the 2nd oldest known crater in the world. It is included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.
